Tomato Thokku / Thakkali Thokku recipe / Tomato Pickle Recipe with step by step pictures and a short YouTube video. Whenever I get tomatoes cheap in the market, I immediately try this pickle without any other thought, as it is such a versatile recipe, which is a heavenly combo with Idli, dosa, chapati, phulka, curd rice etc. It stays good for 2 to 3 days, when kept outside too, you can even pack it for travelling, but use sesame oil generously.

Tomato Thokku | Thakkali Thokku Recipe | Tomato Pickle Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/4 Kg Tomato / தக்காளி
- 2 Pinch Turmeric Powder / மஞ்சள்தூள்
- 1 tsp Chilli Powder / மிளகாய்த்தூள்
- 1/2 tsp Sambar Powder / சாம்பார் தூள்
- Salt / உப்பு As Required
- 1/4 tsp Methi Seeds Powder
- 1/4 tsp Jaggery / வெல்லம்
To Temper
- 2 to 3 tbsp Gingelly Oil / நல்லெண்ணெய்
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds / கடுகு
- 2 Generous Pinch Hing / பெருங்காயம்
- 1 Sprig Curry Leaves / கருவேப்பில்லை
Instructions
- First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready.
- Then chop the tomatoes very finely. You can even grind it in a mixer and puree it, this method lends a smooth thokku recipe. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, once it starts to crackle, throw few curry leaves and sprinkle hing.
- Now add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and required salt.
- Then add chilli powder and sambar powder. Cook covered for 5 to 6 minutes in very low flame. The tomatoes leave a lot of water and look mushy now. Furthermore, mash the tomatoes with the ladle slightly.
- Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes in low flame, until the oil separates. Finally, add the methi seeds powder and mix well. (For making methi seeds powder - dry roast the methi seeds in a pan, cool down, then crush it in a mortar and pestle or grind it in a dry mixer).

Tips for Tomato Thokku
1. Use deep red coloured and ripe tomatoes for a vibrant colour. Also, nattu thakkali / tomato works best for this Tomato Thokku.2. I chopped the tomatoes finely and used it, you can even grind it in a mixer, puree it and use.
3. If the tomatoes you use are not tangy, 1/4 tsp of tamarind paste can be added.
4. I suggest using sesame oil for tempering, which gives a nice taste, also use it generously too.
5. For a different taste, 4 or 5 shallots and garlic flakes can be used for this Thakkali Thokku Recipe.
6. Ensure there is no moisture content left-back after cooking the tomatoes, else it gets spoiled easily.
7. Don't skip jaggery and methi seeds powder, as it enhances the taste of this Tomato Pickle Recipe.
8. It stays good for 10 days under refrigeration and 3 to 4 days when kept outside.
