Sweet Poha Recipe / Vella Aval with step by step pics. This Sweet Aval Recipe is another quick Janmashtami Recipe which needs just 2 minutes cooking time. If you are afraid of making Uppu Seedai, Thattai or Murukku which has an elaborate process, then try this aval jaggery, where the whole process gets done within 5 minutes. The only tip to be noted here is the poha should be perfectly soaked, that is if soaked for less time the poha remains crunchy or if soaked for more time it becomes like porridge.

  • 1 Cup Thick Poha / Flattened Rice / அவல்
  • ¾ Cup Jaggery / வெல்லம்
  • ¼ Cup Water
  • 1 tsp Ghee / நெய் Link for Homemade Ghee
  • 5 Cashew / முந்திரி
  • 2 Cardamom / ஏலக்காய்
  • 2 tbsp Grated coconut / துருவிய தேங்காய்

Instructions

  • First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready. Clean the poha and rinse it well in water twice. Then pour the water, just till immersing level. Keep immersed in water for only 2 minutes, if kept for more time, the poha will disintegrate and becomes like porridge.

  • Heat and melt the jaggery. Once it becomes thick, switch off the flame (no one string consistency is needed).
  • Strain the jaggery through a filter over the soaked poha. Now, heat 1 tsp of ghee in a small pan, add the cashews, cardamom pods and fry till golden colour.
  • Add the fried cashews and cardamom pods to the poha.
  • Give a gentle mix and finally add grated coconut.
  • Do try this Vella Aval for this Janmashtami Festival.

Notes

Tips for Sweet Poha Recipe

  1. If using thin poha, just soak it for 1 minute, but I suggest using thick poha.
  2. Always clean the poha once for dust or stones, before soaking.
  3. Soak the poha for only 2 minutes. If kept for more time, the poha disintegrates and becomes like a porridge.
  4. Adjust jaggery as per sweetness required. The colour of the Vella Aval depends on the type of jaggery used, for a bright colour use 'Paagu Vellam'.
  5. Don't add extra water for melting the jaggery, as it makes the poha soggy or watery.
  6. Always filter the jaggery to remove the impurities for this Sweet Poha Recipe.
  7. Just heat the jaggery till it melts and becomes thick, no one string consistency is required.
  8. For more flavour, roast the coconut along with cashews and then add to the Sweet Aval Recipe.
  9. For a divine aroma, 1 pinch of edible camphor can be added to the poha.
