Health Mix Powder / Sathu Maavu Recipe with step by step pics and a short YouTube video. If you like my video, please share it and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to my channel. This mix is a combination of whole grains, pulses, lentils, nuts etc, slow roasted and then ground to a fine powder. There is no specific measurement or a particular ingredient to prepare this health mix, You can use other ingredients like oats, flax seeds, black rice, dried green peas, cowpeas, masoor dal too, I have not used these in my recipe. Also, I have given the method of preparing the sweet and salt version of porridge using this mix. Furthermore, if you prepare salt porridge frequently, skip the cardamoms pods from the list. This health mix can be given to toddlers from 1 year, you can even add ajwain, dry ginger too in the list which helps in digestion and definitely, adults too can have it. Even this mix can be used to prepare Dosa, Adai, Laddu, Kozhukattai and Multigrain Chapati, Phulka etc. Though the roasting part is a time consuming one, you can prepare in small batches it yields a lot in quantity also. It stays good for a year in freezer and for a more healthier version, you can sprout the grains and then grind (I have given a list of some grains which can be sprouted, do read the tips section).

Ingredients

1 Cup = 250 ML, 1 tsp = 5 ML

  • ¼ Kg Green Gram / பச்சை பயிறு
  • ¼ Kg Pearl Millet / Bajra / கம்பு
  • ¼ Kg Jowar / Sorghum / சோளம்
  • 100 Gram Ragi / Finger Millet / ராகி
  • 100 Gram Whole Wheat / கோதுமை
  • 100 Gram Foxtail Millet / தினை
  • 25 Gram Red Rice / சிகப்பு அரிசி
  • 25 Gram Sago / Sabudana / ஜவ்வரிசி
  • 25 Gram Black Gram Urad Dal / கருப்பு உளுந்து
  • 25 Gram Fried Gram / பொட்டுக்கடலை
  • 10 Cashews / முந்திரி
  • 10 Almonds / Badam / பாதாம்
  • 7 to 8 Pods Cardamom / ஏலக்காய்

Instructions

  • First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready. Ensure all the ingredients are clean without dust or stones. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan, add the green gram and roast it for few minutes till nice aroma wafts, keep it separately in a wide plate. Do roast all the ingredients in low or medium flame, else it gets burnt and the Sathu Maavu tastes bitter.
  • Then add the pearl millet, jowar and roast for few minutes till it pops up. Now add the finger millet, whole wheat and roast it.
  • Now dry roast the foxtail millet, red rice and sago.
  • Roast the black gram and fried gram. Keep everything in a wide plate and allow it cool completely.
  • Finally dry roast the cashews, almonds and cardamom. Always roast the cashews, almonds and pulse it separately, else it becomes a paste.
  • I ground all the ingredients in a dry mixer in batches and sieved it once. If you have a flour mill nearby, you can grind it, which makes the work simple.
