How to Clean Banana Flower (Vazhaipoo) with step by step pics and a short Youtube video. If you like my video, please share it and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to my channel. This is a basic post of cleaning Banana Flower / Blossom, which will be helpful for beginners in the kitchen. It is not a rocket science secret, but it is a little bit time-consuming process. Before jumping into the cleaning process, first, grease your hands with oil or wear gloves to avoid staining. The main point to be noted is there are 2 parts which should be removed, 1st is the plastic-like cover (perianth) and the 2nd is the long thread with stigma. Ensure to remove these parts completely as it makes the dish taste bitter and it is not digestible. Usually, this banana flower is used to prepare Korma, Poriyal and Vada (will share the recipe soon). Banana flower helps to ward off the stomach infection, get rid of kidney stones, helps nursing mothers, finally has a lot and a lot of vitamins/minerals. So readers, do include this banana flower in your diet at least twice in a month to lead a healthy life.

Ingredients

  • 1 Banana Flower
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 2 tbsp Curd

Instructions

  • First, grease your hands well with little oil, to avoid the stain. Then, start lifting the large pink petals (bracts) continuously and remove the row of small florets from each pink petal, till you get a tender, conical white part (banana heart). Do watch my YouTube video of How to clean Banana Flower for easy understanding.
  • Collect all the small row of florets from each bract and keep it aside. At one stage, you will not be able to separate the bracts and you get a tight, tender, white coloured part. This conical part can be consumed as such or chopped into small pieces and used in cooking.
  • Take one set of florets and separate each flower (first Pic). Check for 2 parts from each flower, which should be removed as it is not digestible.
  • First part is the Perianth or Tepal:  a plastic, translucent, papery-like cover. The second part: style - a long thread like structure, with a bulb like top-stigma. Remove both these parts from each flower continuously.
  • Chop all the cleaned banana flower into medium or small sized pieces. Take 2 cups of water, then add 2 tbsp of curd and mix well to make buttermilk. Transfer the chopped banana flower to the buttermilk to avoid de-colouration, it stays good for 2 days in fridge. If using immediately, don't need to follow this method, you can use it directly.
Hope this post, How to clean Banana Flower (vazhaipoo) will be useful to all my readers.
