Gopalkala Recipe aka Dahikala Recipe with stepwise pics and a short YouTube video. If you like my video, please share it and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to my channel. This is a no-cook dish prepared with Poha or Beaten rice or aval and curd on the day of Janmashtami all over North India, especially in Maharashtra. It is prepared from poha, curd, milk and topped up with cucumber mainly, pomegranate, guava or apple. I felt the seasoning part is quiet interesting as ghee is used, which is the highlight. This prasadam is extremely easy and hardly takes a few minutes to prepare and to end it briefly, it is nothing but similar to the curd rice replaced with poha. I have already shared other versions like Plain Curd Rice, Millet Curd rice and Temple Curd Rice too, do check it. If interested check my, Janmashtami Recipes and 100+ Lockdown Recipes.

Equipment

  • Stovetop

Ingredients

1 Cup = 250 ML, 1 tsp = 5 ML

  • 1 Cup Poha / Aval
  • ½ Cup Curd Link for Homemade Curd
  • ¼ Cup Milk
  • 1 tsp Butter Link for Homemade Butter
  • ¼ Cup Cucumber
  • ¼ Cup Pomegranate Pearls
  • 4 tbsp Grated Coconut
  • 2 Pinch Sugar
  • Salt As Required

To Temper

  • 2 tsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Jeera
  • 2 Green Chilli
  • 2 tsp Ginger

Instructions

  • First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready.
  • Then, grate the coconut, chop the cucumber finely and set aside the pomegranate pearls. Slit the green chilli and chop the ginger 'To Temper'.
  • To a strainer, add the poha / aval. Then, rinse well for 2 to 3 times to remove any dust or debris. Keep by side for 2 minutes, so it absorbs the water and turns fluffy.
  • To a mixing bowl, add the curd, milk, butter, sugar and required salt. Then, whisk it once.
  • Now, add the poha, it would have turned soft by this time.
  • Mix it well, then press it with the same ladle gently, so it gets mashed a bit.
  • Add the cucumber, grated coconut and pomegranate pearls.
  • Heat 2 tsp of ghee in a small tadka pan. Then, add the jeera, ginger, green chilli and season it.
  • Pour the seasoned ingredients over the poha.
  • Finally, give a gentle mix. As poha turns dry soon, adjust with curd or milk before serving.

Notes

Tips for Dahikala Recipe

1. Don't use thin poha, as it disintegrates while rinsing or mixing itself. I used thick poha.
2. After rinsing the poha, set aside for 2 to 3 minutes, so it turns soft and fluffy.
3. Use fresh and thick curd for a good taste, never use sour curd.
4. Also, use full-fat milk for a creamy texture. The milk should be at room temperature, don't add hot milk to the curd.
5.  Don’t skip milk as it prevents this Gopalkala Recipe from turning sour.
6. Addition of butter lends a rich taste and creaminess, but it is optional.
7. Sugar is a must ingredient for this Dahikala Recipe and it also enhances the taste of the dish too.
8. In some places, even 1 tbsp of soaked bengal gram or cashews are used.
9. For a different taste, 1/4 cup of murmura also can be added along with poha.
10. For a variation, finely chopped fruits like 1/4 cup of banana, guava, apples etc can be used.
