Chocolate Modak Recipe | How to make Chocolate Modak with stepwise pics and a short YouTube video. If you like my video, please SUBSCRIBE to my youtube channel. This is a super easy modak made with 3 main ingredients only, Khoya/mawa, chocolate and sugar. The interesting part is, there is no steaming for this modak recipe, just put all the 3 ingredients in a pan, mix till it forms a mass and shape it. I have used a mould to shape this modak, you can use chocolate moulds or shape with your hands or make like a peda. Also, this modak stays good for a week under refrigeration and my kids who never touch any modak, loved it a lot, so it is definitely a  kids friendly recipe too. Equipment

  • Stovetop
  • Modak Mould

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Khoya / Mava
  • 3 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • ⅓ Cup Chocolate
  • 1 tsp Ghee Link for Homemade Ghee

Instructions

  • First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready.
  • To a heavy-bottomed or nonstick pan, add the khoya.
  • Add the sugar and simmer the flame completely.
  • Continue mixing for 2 minutes, till the sugar melts.
  • Add the cocoa powder and chocolate chips.
  • Continue mixing for another 2 minutes, the chocolate chips melt and the mixture turns more goey now.
  • Now, pour 1 tsp of ghee. Mix for 1 more minute, till the mixture leaves the sides of the pan and forms a mass. Don't cook furthermore, else the modak turns hard and dense. To check the consistency, pinch a portion of the mixture and try to roll into a ball, then it's perfect.
  • Immediately, transfer the mixture to another plate or bowl. Allow it cool down for 10 minutes. Knead the dough once and ensure it is smooth.
  • Take the Modak mould and grease with little ghee. Stuff little mixture into the mould and use your fingers to spread it. Otherwise, make a ball and stuff into the mould from the bottom.
  • Place the mixture inside the mould and seal it. Now open the mould gently and de-mould the modak. (Please watch my video of how to make modak)
  • Do the same with all the mixture. Give a resting time of 10 minutes, so the modak turns firm.

Notes

Tips on How to make Chocolate Modak

1. Use good quality chocolate chips and cocoa powder for a nice taste.
2. The addition of cocoa powder is optional. But it lends a more chocolate flavor to the modak.
3. Chocolate chips can be replaced with grated chocolate too. I used dark coloured chocolate chips.
4. The colour of the Chocolate Modak Recipe changes accordingly to the variety of chocolate chips used.
5. Adjust sugar as per sweetness required, but not more else the modak won't be firm.
6. Switch off the flame when the mixture forms a mass itself, otherwise, the modak turns dense.
7. For a different flavour, 2 drops of vanilla essence or 1/4 tsp of cardamom powder or even cinnamon powder can be added to the modak mixture.
8. Always cool the mixture a bit (for 10 minutes) and then make modak, so it will be firm.
9. This Modak stays good for 1 week under refrigeration. Even you can make the mixture alone, refrigerate it and make modak when needed.
