Poha Chivda Recipe / Aval Mixture Recipe with step by step pictures and a short YouTube video. If you like my video, please share it and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to my channel. This chivda is another Janmashtami special snack, made from beaten rice or rice flakes, mildly sweeter, spicy yet such a simple recipe. You can give a lot of variations by adding fried coconut bits, almonds, maida biscuits, sesame seeds, garlic flakes or a few pinches of sugar too. For a healthy option, poha can be pan-fried with very little oil, it stays crunchy in that way too. Do check my Poha Kesari / Sheera and Poha Kheer / Aval Payasam Recipes too.

Equipment

  • Stovetop

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Thick Poha / Flattened Rice / அவல்
  • ¼ Cup Peanuts / கடலை
  • ¼ Cup Fried Grams / பொட்டுக்கடலை
  • 10 Cashew / முந்திரி
  • 10 Raisins / உலர்ந்த திராட்சை
  • 2 Sprig Curry Leaves / கருவேப்பில்லை
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder / மஞ்சள்தூள்
  • 2 tsp Red Chilli Powder / மிளகாய்த்தூள்
  • Salt / உப்பு As Required
  • Oil For Deep Frying

Instructions

  • First, measure and keep all the ingredients ready. I used a metal strainer to fry, so it will be easy to collect all the fried items but you can fry in oil directly too. Heat oil in a pan and add the peanuts.
  • Once the peanuts turn  to golden colour, drain it in a kitchen towel.
  • Then add the fried gram, fry it in very low flame as it turns brown soon and keep aside. Now fry the cashews and raisins.
  • Simmer the flame and fry the poha in batches. Finally, fry the curry leaves till crispy.
  • To a wide plate or bowl, transfer the fried poha, peanuts, fried gram, cashews, raisins and curry leaves.
  • Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and required salt. Do the mixing when the fried items are warm itself, so the turmeric and chilli powder sticks to the poha.
  • Try this Aval Mixture Recipe for this Janmashtami Festival.
