Mixed Vegetable Sambar

It’s an another quick version of Kadhamba Sambar but made with Sambar powder. This Mixed Vegetable Sambar can be either be prepared with English vegetables or even country vegetables. But each vegetables adds different flavour and taste to the Sambar. Lets go to the recipe.

Preparation + cook time – 45 Minutes
Serves – 4


  • Toor dal – ½ cup
  • Small Onion – 7 to 8
  • Tomatoes – 2
  • Mixed Vegetables – 1 cup
  • Tamarind – 1 medium gooseberry sized
  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
  • Sambar powder – 4 tsp
  • Salt -as needed

To Temper

  • Mustard seeds – 1tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek – ¼ tsp
  • Jeera – ½ tsp
  • Red chilly – 1
  • Hing – 2 pinch
  • Curry leaves – 1 Sprig
  • Oil or Ghee – 2 tblsp

1. Peel small onion, chop tomatoes and vegetables. Pressure cook dal for 5 whistles, mash it well. Soak tamarind in water and extract tamarind pulp. Keep it by side.
2. Now heat kadai and temper the items given in the table ‘To temper’. Add small onion, tomatoes and mixed veggies one by one.  Saute well until the raw smell of the veggies leaves.

3. Now add dal water, tamarind water, turmeric powder, sambar powder and salt. Boil till the veggies get cooked, add mashed dal and mix well. Boil  for a while and garnish with coriander leaves.Mixed Vegetable Sambar Step3
Serve with hot steamed rice and any poriyal.

Mixed Vegetable Sambar

1. I used carrot, beans, radish and capsicum. Veggies choice is purely optional.
2. You can use country veggies (nattu kaigari) like brinjal, drumstick, cluster beans, plantain, yellow pumpkin etc.
3. If you are adding okra, first saute okra in oil and then add to Mixed Vegetable Sambar.
