Lemon Rice is a very simple variety rice next to curd rice. In Tamil Nadu cuisine, we make this Lemon Rice for Kaanum Pongal and Aadi 18 along with other variety rices.This is also known as ‘Elumichai Sadham’ in Tamil and it is an apt recipe for travel too with any pickle.

Preparation +cooking time – 30 Mins  
Serves – 2
  • Cooked Rice – 1 cup
  • Lemon – 1 big sized
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
  • Water – 1 tblsp
  • Salt – As needed
To Temper
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal – 2 tsp
  • Red Chilli – 1
  • Green Chilli – 2
  • Peanuts – 2 tblsp
  • Hing – ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprig
  • Oil -1 tblsp
1. Pressure cook the rice with water ratio of 1 : 2  for 3 whistles. Add little salt and ½ tsp of oil while cooking. Fluff up the rice with fork and cool down. Chop green chillies, crush ginger. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard and channa dal.

2. Then add roasted peanuts, ginger, chillies, hing and curry leaves. Fry till golden brown but not burnt.


3. Add 1 tblsp of water, turmeric powder and salt. Give a quick stir and switch off the flame.


4. Now squeeze lemon juice and add it to the cooled rice. Mix well and adjust salt.

Serve this Elumichai Sadham or Lemon Rice with any vadam or potato chips.

  1. You can also use any one type of chilli for tempering.
  2. Adjust lemon juice and chillies as per your taste for the Lemon Rice.
  3. You can use any rice like basmati rice, long grain rice or even leftover rice to make this Lemon Rice.
  4. Always switch off flame before adding lemon juice or else it will taste bitter and the vitamins in the lemon juice will be lost.
  5. Add turmeric powder generously for bright colour, hing and curry leaves for nice aroma.
