This Ginger Chutney is a winner recipe for Idly and Dosa. I learnt this recipe from my Mom who is a expert in making this chutney. Try this ginger chutney at least once in a while as all of you know ginger has so many health benefits. I wanted to post this recipe after Gokulashtami since most of us would have had lots of sweets and other dishes during this festival which might have caused lot of indigestion problems. This chutney would be a rescue recipe for all stomach disorders. Ginger is very useful for relieving from digestive problems, loss of appetite, nausea and helps to prevent cancer. Ginger is also said to be one  of the most healthiest spices in the world.

Recipe Cuisine: South Indian |  Recipe Category: Breakfast / Chutney Recipes
Preparation + Cook Time: 15 minutes  |  Serves: 2 to 3

  • Small Onion – 100g
  • Tomato – 1
  • Green Chilli – 3 to 4
  • Ginger – 25g
  • Grated Coconut  – 1/4 cup
  • Salt – To taste
To Temper
  • Mustard – 1/2 tsp 
  • Urad Dal – 1/4 tsp 
  • Curry Leaves – Few 
  • Oil – 1 tsp

1. Peel the skin of small onion, ginger,chop tomato and slit green chillies. In a pan, add 2 tsp of oil and saute small onion, tomatoes and green chilli.


2. Now saute ginger in the kadai. Switch off flame. Add grated coconut and give a quick stir.
3. Allow it to cool. Transfer the contents to a mixer, add salt and grind it.
Ginger-Chutney-Step34. Add water little by little and grind it to a smooth paste. Adjust water consistency. Temper the chutney, with the items listed in the table ‘To Temper’

1. Adjust green chilli according to your spice level.
2. Slit the green chilli while sauting or else it will splutter.
3. You can also add more ginger for dominating ginger flavour.
