Curd Rice 

The Curd rice is also known as ‘Thayir Sadam’ in Tamil Nadu. It is very popular in South India as the lunch or dinner is incomplete without this rice. It is such a easy and comforting dish which tastes divinely with a simple seasoning and any pickle.

Recipe Cuisine – Indian
Category – Main Course / Rice Varieties
Preparation + cook time – 30 Minutes
Serves – 2

  • Rice – ½ cup
  • Thick Curd – 1 cup
  • Milk – ¼ cup
  • Butter – 1 tsp (optional)
  • Grated Carrot – 1 tblsp
  • Coriander Leaves – ½ tsp
  • Salt – As needed
To Temper
  • Oil – 1 tblsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Urad Dal – ½ tsp
  • Green Chilli – 1 finely chopped
  • Ginger – 1 small piece chopped
  • Hing –  1 pinch
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
1.Cook rice for 5 whistles. Let the rice cool down. Then add curd, butter and salt.

2. Mash well and add warm milk.

3. Heat oil in a tadka pan and add the  items listed in the table  ‘To temper’. Add to the rice and mix well.

Serve it with any potato fry or pickle.


Curd Rice 3
1. Always use thick curd for creamy curd rice.
2. Heat milk before adding. Milk prevents the curd rice turning sour.
3. You can also add roasted cashew and raisins. Instead of veggies, you can add fruits like grapes and pomegranate.
4. Also slightly overcook the rice, so that it can be mashed easily.
5. Adding butter gives a restaurant style rich and creamy curd rice.
