Capsicum Paruppu Usili

Usually paruppu Usili is made with beans, cluster Beans, carrot and vazhaipoo. I came to know about this Capsicum Paruppu Usili from my sister. The very first  time when I tried this recipe itself, I became a fan of this dish. Any recipe with capsicum goes wrong? That too Paruppu Usili.

Recipe category – Lunch side dish
Preparation + cooking time – 1.5 hours  
Serves – 3

  • Capsicum – 3
  • Toor Dal – 1/4 cup
  • Channa dal- 1/4 cup
  • Red Chilli- 5 to 6 (as per your spice level)
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Salt- as needed
To Temper
  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Urad dal -1/2tsp
  • Red chilli -1
  • Hing – 2 generous pinch
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Oil – 1 tbsp

1. Chop capsicum into cubes.Soak dal in water for 1 hour wash dal and drain the water.

2. Grind dal with red chillies, turmeric, hing and salt to a coarse paste.

3. Keep it in an Idli plate and steam for 10 minutes. Crumble it when cool. Heat oil in a kadai and temper the items given ‘To temper’.

4. Add capsicum,salt and mix well .saute for a while, until the raw smell of the capsicum leaves.Now add the steamed dal mixture. Cover and cook for another 5 minutes.

This Capsicum Paruppu Usili tastes great with any sambar and rice varieties.

1. Don’t overcook Capsicum or else it will lose crunchiness.
2. You can  soak red chillies along with dal for easy grinding.
3. For variation, use any one variety of dal for this Usili.
