Beetroot Poriyal is a very simple poriyal. It also tastes awesome with its natural sweetness and overall beetroot decreases the risk of obesity, heart disease and promotes healthy complexion.

Preparation +cooking time – 25 Mins  
Serves – 3
  • Onion – 1
  • Beetroot –  2
  • Green Chilli – 2
  • Sambar Powder – 1 tsp
  • Coconut grated – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – As Needed
To Temper
  • Oil – 3 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – ½ tsp
  • Jeera – ½  tsp
  • Hing – a pinch
  • Curry Leaves – 1sprig

1.Peel the skin of the beetroot, chop onion and beetroot finely, slit green chilies.

2. Heat oil in a kadai,  temper with the items given in the table ‘To temper’.Add onion ,green chilli and fry till transparent.
3. Now add  beetroot, sambar powder,salt and mix well.  
4. Add little water and cook till beetroot turns soft but not mushy. Finally  add grated coconut and mix well.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve this Beetroot Poriyal with any variety rice.


  1. For variation, use red chilli for tempering.
  2. Instead of chopping, you can also grate beetroot.
  3. Adding sambar powder is optional,but it gives nice taste to the Beetroot Poriyal.
  4. You can add a piece of crushed garlic pod while tempering, which  gives a nice flavour.
